Cuttings from Plants 2
April 24th 2006 07:47
Last edition we were talking about the steps needed to take and grow a cutting from a plant successfully. We covered how to choose a plant, how to prepare the garden container, selecting stems, and cutting a node.
This time we will look at the rest of the steps needed to successfully grow those little cuttings.
5. Preparation of Node before cutting
First you'll need a razor blade. Lie the cutting down on a flat surface, and cut into the node, splitting it. It only needs to be a little cut. The reason for doing this is to ensure a greater success of growth, as roots grow from the nodes.
Next, to ensure that leaves don't take all the energy needed to grow the root structure, gently remove all but 1, or 2 leaves.
6. Planting holes
Pre-make potting holes with a pencil, or similar object, in the container you have provided. Pre-making them ensures that the rooting hormone remains on the cuttings (next step)
7. Rooting Hormones
The name is not as lurid as it sounds! Rooting hormone is used as an agent to stimulate new root growth from the plant node. It can be bought from your local nursery.
Fill one cup with water, and then place a small amount (only small!) in a tea cup. Before planting the nodes, first dip the end into the water, and then into the rooting hormone.
8. Planting.
This is easy. Just place the node into the hole you have made, and gently compact the earth around it. Don't press too hard, just make sure it firm. Just as an idea, you should be able to fitseveral nodes into a small 10cm x 10cm container.
Well, now you have your nodes, planted, and ready for growth.
Wasn't too hard was it?
