Ever payed $12 for a rose for your loved one?
Well how special do you'll think they'll feel when you say: 'Actually, I
grew it myself. This one comes straight from the heart'
Perhaps they'll break up with you after a corn-ball line like that, but if you're one of those brave souls who likes to hang out on a limb once and a while, and enjoys their gardening, here's some tips to turn your welting flowers into melting lovers...
1. Disbudding
If your flowers are buding all over the shop, disbudding is a method of removing excess buds, to concentrate the growth on a few select flowers. Basically all you have to do is remove one or more buds from each cluster.
(note: this technique can be used to grow giant vegetables, as all the growth is concentrated on the one bud...however this should only be attempted by the initiated!)
2. Improve ya soil
Don't get cheap on the soil, it makes a world of difference. Instead of spreading it out thinly across the entire garden-bed, try concentrating it in areas where you want to grow the best stuff, and then concentrate on improving the rest of the soil conditions elsewhere.
3. Insects are cool, just not on my plants
If you don't wants the little peskies blissing out on your greenery, simple tricks can get them moving along.
Use soap/oil based sprays to deal with aphids and scale.
Regular use of seaweed is not only restricted to revolving sushi restaurants. Seaweed based products, when sprayed in gentle mists over your loved ones (plants, that is) give them added resistance.
That's all for now folks. Hope your garden is breaking it down in abundant efflurescence.

p.s. thanks to Anette McFarlane for some of the tips. She has a great number of them on the ABC web-site, which you can check out here
